1. MIGRAINE HEADACHE

Get a migraine, and all you want to do is shut the world off. A migraine is much more than just a bad headache. It's prompted by biochemical changes in the brain that cause the veins in your head to become narrow (constrict) and then widen (dilate). This in turn activates the pain receptors in your brain. The cause of this process is unknown, but here are some indicators that may happen in your body before a migraine strikes.

TRIGGERS

The most common, well-recognized triggers of migraines include:

  • Missing or delaying regular meals
  • Caffeine withdrawals (tea / coffee)
  • Food & alcohol (such as certain wines / chocolates)
  • Dehydration
  • Bright or flickering lights

SYMPTOMS

  • Moderate-to-severe throbbing pain
  • Pain on one side of your head, that may be concentrated around the eye, temple or behind the ear
  • Pain that is aggravated by movement
  • Nausea and vomiting, abdominal pain or diarrhea
  • Loss of appetite
  • Blurred vision, fatigue, dizziness or paleness
  • Sensitivity to light, sound, smell or temperature

2. TENSION HEADACHE

Two-hour meetings. Unexpected traffic jams. Screaming kids. These days, it seems headache causes are unavoidable. Tension headaches, are very common and it accounts for 90% of all headaches.

A tension headache is a mild to moderate pain that can be described as feeling like a tight band is around your head. Unlike a migraine, it is not accompanied by nausea/ vomiting and is usually not worsened by physical activity, lights, sounds, or smells.

What causes tension headaches?

Some factors that may cause tension headaches:

  • Emotional tension due to anxiety/stress
  • Physical tension in the muscles of the scalp and neck, for example, muscle tension due to poor posture while working at a computer
